In a landmark move , the European Union is introducing new regulations against greenwashing and for more transparent environmental labels.
The directive, drafted by the European Parliament , aims to protect consumers against misleading marketing practices and increase transparency of environmentally friendly products.
Dealing with deceptive practices
Didier Reynders, European Commission Justice Commissioner, stressed the need for stricter regulation due to the increasing number of deceptive, eco-friendly labels on the market.
According to the directive, manufacturers and distributors must justify the claims made on labels.
Thanks to transparent labels and accurate information, consumers can be sure that they are buying what is stated on the product.
Checking eco-friendly labels
The EU entrusts the task of monitoring sustainability labels to public authorities .
This also aims to strengthen the reliability of labels and prevent companies from communicating false environmental properties and awareness.
The EU hopes that the measures will contribute to providing consumers with more comprehensive and reliable information and to increasing demand for truly environmentally friendly products.
We also made a statement about the legislation at home.
Edina Tóth, Fidesz MEP and rapporteur for the EP's Environment Committee, also agrees with the legislation .
He highlighted that the phenomenon of greenwashing has been gaining more and more ground recently, which is why it is particularly important to fight against it.
According to him, the legislation will effectively ban products and services that are deceptively green.
Key points of the new directive:
-
Terms such as "eco-friendly", "natural", "biodegradable", etc. cannot be used on labels without evidence.
-
only labels supported by officially approved certification schemes are allowed in the EU
-
Warranty information must be clearly visible on labels
-
Claims about the durability of a product or encouraging its replacement must be substantiated.
The victory of truly green initiatives
The new directive is a decisive step towards curbing greenwashing practices and promoting credible sustainability initiatives.
The EU aims to create a market where consumers can confidently choose products that match their values by holding companies accountable for their environmental claims.
The directive must be approved by the European Council , after which it will be officially published, after which member states will have 24 months to implement it in practice.
Transparency is also of utmost importance to CYCLE.
Since the beginning , we have strived to be transparent in all aspects of our cleaning products and operations.
We believe it is important that consumers are not misled in this area and can easily navigate among environmentally friendly options. However, for this to happen, it is essential that all green products communicate about themselves transparently and comply with regulations.
Our work also draws attention to how common the phenomenon of greenwashing is and how we can navigate the challenges it poses.
We are committed to the topic, which is why we participate in conferences and various events to keep up-to-date and effectively apply the principles of transparency in our work.
If you also want to support transparent and truly eco-friendly cleaning products, buy CYCLE!
