This month we celebrate women, let's also talk about roles at home - 6 tips for sharing the housework.
Running a household and keeping every corner of it tidy and clean is a huge investment of time. Cooking, cleaning, and washing at home are usually a set of activities that a woman is forced to do in addition to her everyday life. All this while a woman still works 8 (or more) hours, and then somewhere along the line, a situation arises where she can continue working at home - since household work is less often divided among Hungarian families.
How is it that women work so much more to create a home than men?
On the one hand, this cannot be stated so openly, since there are quite a few families where not only one person runs the household, but also those living with them help. On the other hand, of course - like everything - the development of gender roles is the result of a long-term, cultural development, the foundations of which must first be sought in our history. However, we are not revealing a big secret by saying that it is only since the First World War that women have been earning money for their work, while men have always received monetary respect (as well). Women's basic rights began to appear in our society much later, if only if we talk about the fact that they did not have the right to vote, they could not take on leadership roles in public life or in corporate life. And we could list more. This is precisely why women became the creators of the home. But in the meantime, many other things have changed, women could go to work and family roles are no longer as sharply separated as before.
But let's leave history aside for now, it's not always worth looking into the past, let's focus on how we can reverse this invisible work trend or make it more equal!
Tips for dividing up household chores
To avoid burnout in the work-housework-life triad, we bring you some suggestions on how to neatly organize responsibilities in a family.
Have well-separated days, which always have a responsible person. One well-proven method is to divide the week into days and have a responsible person for each day. This will take the burden off each other's shoulders, and cleanliness and order can be maintained in the long run.
Determine which part of the apartment belongs to whom. If the kitchen and bedroom are yours, then your partner should be responsible for the bathroom and living room. It is better to do these in a way that you are responsible for the same part every day, so in this case the previous point should be discarded.
Break up your day and work your way up gradually. If you like to work at your desk in the living room, tidy up your desk before you start. Disinfect your work surface, tidy up any loose items, and you're good to go! And you can tidy up the rest of your living room when the day is over.
Use post-its! Leave notes for yourself and your partner about which areas of the house need cleaning. It's a kindness to both yourself and your partner, and a way to remind yourself without saying a word to remember your daily responsibilities outside of work.
Take turns doing the shopping. It can be very inconvenient when you're stuck in traffic after work and still have to somehow gather the ingredients for dinner. Schedule this for Sunday, or divide the days so that you know who goes shopping and when!
Use cleaning products and dishwashing detergents that you know are good for you and the planet. Choose products that smell good, this can also increase your motivation to clean at home!
