Prevented Ocean Plastic (POP): for the community, for a better quality of life

Prevented Ocean Plastic (POP) is known for its positive environmental impact: reducing plastic pollution in the oceans and contributing to a circular economy. But did you know how much other value the POP program provides to our community? In this article, we show how POP creates sustainable income and jobs for coastal families and encourages small businesses to thrive.

Contribution to livelihood

The Prevented Ocean Plastic Program helps tens of thousands of people around the world make a living. Every day, POP sends more than $100,000 to factory owners to pay bottle collectors. Often disadvantaged, these collectors collect discarded plastic bottles from beaches and coastal areas at risk of plastic pollution. They receive a fair and stable salary in return for their hard work.

Constant, stable income
Bottle collection and participation in the recycling process on beaches has a direct impact on the lives of families living in poverty. This is especially important in developing coastal communities where there is little or no social safety net to ensure families are fed and secure.

Promoting sustainable jobs

By earning a steady income from their work, bottle collectors have the opportunity to buy larger collection bags or perhaps invest in a flatbed truck. This can increase their efficiency: ensure organized operations and increase the amount of plastic waste that can be collected.

More organized work

Beach families can then set up their own collection points, reinvesting their income to increase productivity. This milestone represents progress and growth for individuals as well, providing a dedicated space for collecting and sorting plastic bottles.

Birth of small businesses

By creating more collection points, bottle collectors can further expand their operations. They can invest in machinery and equipment, becoming factory-scale recyclers. This development not only creates additional jobs in their communities, but also allows them to process larger amounts of plastic waste.

In summary, the POP program has a valuable impact on coastal communities: it provides a stable income for individuals and, in the long term, helps small businesses based on bottle collection to develop and flourish.
